Lil Lody The Theory (2011, Mixtape)
Over the past 12 months, Lil Lody has gone from unknown Memphis producer to scoring tracks for rap heavyweights (both literally and figuratively) like Rick Ross, Diddy, and Waka Flocka. First earning notoriety through his work on Ross’ Young Jeezy diss record, “Summa’s Mine”, Lody was approached by the Ciroc Kingpin to score some additional Ross tracks for the Bugatti Boyz record, which so far has resulted in “Another One”.
Counting Drumma Boy and The Runners as influences to his production style, Lody works almost exclusively in the cavernous trap sound of his forebearers (with heavy doses of street rap’s current sonic architect, Lex Luger), all cheap synths and foreboding piano lines, bolstered by a 9th Circle of Hell low end.
The Theory is Lody’s debut solo project, and is pure Memphis Fight Rap. Serg dropped an early single from this project, “Get Off My Dick”, on the first installment of Stay Hatin’, and the Lex Luger produced, aggro-rap of Lody and Yung Kee is representative of what’s in store throughout.
Aside from the new ‘tape, Lody recently produced a handful of tracks for Starlito’s newest record, @ War With Myself, and is rumored to have tracks on the way with Bun B, Nicki Minaj, The Game, DJ Khaled and Birdman. The industry is definitely starting to take notice of the second wave of trap producers like Southside, Lody and Lex — artists looking to expand the post-Jeezy template into something with more menace, more bass and less melody — but innovation will be the key to longevity.
