Tim Hecker and Bricksquad- “Candy Lady (Nem270 Mashup)” (Dank Worries EP, Internet, 2011)
Nem270 is the Ottawa-based, GreenOva-affiliated beatmaker behind most of Mondre’s awesome Dope Since 1991 project, as well as GreenOva favorites “Ice Nites” and “Loud Pack”. Jumping on the mini-trend of weirdo hiphop producers releasing instrumental mixtapes, he’s put out this short, 8-track EP of instrumentals, along with two remixes/mashups, including this beautifully depressing Tim Hecker and Bricksquad blend.
He buries the Bricksquad vocals low in the mix, surrounding them in Hecker’s subterranean hum, giving a thick, humid atmosphere to an otherwise ridiculous song. His experimental, ambient remix of the Yelawolf/Gucci Mane track “She Just Wanna Gas” is also worth a few spins, though each track has its own highlights, like the hissy, reverb-laden samples on “Samples”, and the jackhammer rhythms on “Loud Pack Instrumental.”
