Magnolia Shorty “Monkey On Tha D$ck” (1997, Cash Money)
Reports are starting to come in that New Orleans native, and one of bounce music’s most important female figures, Magnolia Shorty, was found shot to death this morning, December 20, 2010 (though NOLA.com says no IDs have been released by police yet no word from police yet, but DJ Wild Wayne made an announcement on the air on the hip-hop and R&B station Q93.3FM that Magnolia Shorty was one of two victims in today’s shooting).
Christened by N.O. great, the late Magnolia (Soulja) Slim, Shorty was working on a follow up to her full-length, Monkey On Tha D$ck, and most recently gave this brief interview to Spinner.com at SXSW earlier this year.
A tragic loss for a genre still largely misunderstood and underappreciated outside of small pockets of the Internet and the South.
