Roach Gigz “The Dopest 2” (2010)
Haven’t heard much from Roach lately, and I’m guessing / hoping that’s due to him working on Roachy Balboa: Round 2 and other projects.
But he’s back with (what I think is) the first single from RB2, and the production by Cloz is way more mellow than the frenetic post-hyphy slaps we’re used to hearing Roach gas over.
“The Dopest” is driven by DJ Fresh-esque sine waves and 808s, but Roach G combines some “grown man” raps — rhyming about his newborn son — with the braggadocio of some of the best moments from Roachy Balboa, like “Goomba Pimpin” and “Respect It”.
The result is a record that succeeds part of time, though at other points, finds Roach stuck between adolescent folly and the demands of fatherhood:
I just want a ring for my family and my team
It’s not thrilling that this is the first installment of “Goomba Fridays,” yet another G.O.O.D. Friday-aping gimmick, because Roach doesn’t need this type of manufactured hype to gain ears, he just needs to continue to rap his ass off and improve as an emcee.
Ah, well…shit isn’t my call, anyway, and it’s not going to keep me from checking for whatever he drops next week.
