Tum Tum “I Be Kickin” (2010)
The only record Dallas producer 2Much (“Ice Cream Paint Job”) has on Purp Cobain borrows heavily from the Shawty Redd/Drummaboy/traphouse aesthetic, which is appropriate for Tum Tum’s threats of knocking doors down (R.I.P. Chad). 2Much is clearly bringing mainstream, 00’s ATL production techniques south to the Lone Star State (better late than never…?).
Purp Cobain, a better rapped, though maybe not better produced, album than The Beautiful Struggle, still works best, though, when Da Cannabis Club President is rapping over Isley samples, wah guitar, and sing-song R&B choruses, but either way, if you paid attention to “southern rap” in 2010, this album has to at least be honorably mentioned on any year-end list (doubly so if you are putting Krit Wuz Here on such a hypothetical list).
