Young L: “Pound”

I wrote a short profile of The Pack in 2006 for Blender. The interview was memorable. I was working at another magazine at the time, so I scheduled a phoner in the office (for landline purposes) for 7pm. I finally received a call at 9pm. All four members, none older than 17, were on the line. They talked over each other, getting tangled up in tangents; their voices were indiscernible, as groups of teenage friends often are. After about 20 minutes of failed small talk about sneakers (they were hot with “Vans”) Lil B, Lil Uno, and Stunnaman became bored and increasingly silent. The person who answered my questions with clarity and seriousness (bad for a zinger-y magazine piece, but nice for conversation) was Young L, the group’s producer and de facto leader. Young L continues to be a thoughtful, talented person most people don’t seem to care about. This year, his groupmate Lil B, who is amusing and prolific and maybe a genius but probably not, became a going concern. Poor Young L.

Saw Young L reach out to Young Dro on Twitter about where to send beats…someone set that up, okcool.  Even his ice is underrated.
