Ice-T - “The Tower” (Sire, 1991)
Tumblr Challenge: Reblog and add another rap song that samples John Carpenter’s Halloween theme. I’m starting here with the obvious (and I think the earliest?) but I want to hear some super secret tape only Memphis shit before the end of the day. @Beerandrap I’m looking in your direction. #halloweenrapps
Luke & Lil Jon “Head Tonight” (2006, Mixtape)
Just heard this for the first time while listening to Dave Tompkin’s Halloween mix. Interesting theme to sample for a song about getting head, but then Luther Campbell is involved and that guy could sample music from “The Exorcist” or “Requiem For A Dream” and still rap about freaks. I guess it does make sense.
I think this track is originally from Southern Smoke, Vol. 6: Luke For President, which was released* 85 Internet years ago in 06 and pretty clearly seems like Luke was trying to “cash in” on the crunk/”Dirty South” infatuation in “mainstream” rap at the time (when MTV/BET was playing Pastor Troy, Trick Daddy, Yin Yang Twins and David Banner videos pretty regularly).
Inexplicably the tape also features Cam’ron and Memphis Bleek, I guess to try and get a few more ears from the East Coast. Bottom line, probably not the strongest marketing strategy from a guy who historically has been pretty shrewd in that respect.

*Or at least that’s the date it was added to Dat Piff, which I realize is probably not the best way to source release dates. Discogs needs to step their mixtape-documenting-game up.
