Live from the New Underground: SPIN Celebrates Hip-Hop's DIY Moment

Great words from Brandon (@notrivia), tracing the development of independent rap music, and adding some definition to the blurry recesses of the 2011 ‘underground’ in a measured, yet optimistic way.

There’s so much good (and bad) happening in DIY (or ‘faux-DIY’) rap currently, and pieces like this are kind of crucial to creating a record/documenting the period for posterity. Yeah, reblogs and likes and Fb shares are crucial to the virality of a piece of music/artist, but well-conceived, well-researched pieces are vital, too.
