Ethereal feat. Will- Twisted on the Highway
Blak Jak & Project Pat- Ride and Swerve (ETHERRMX)
Just when I think I’ve run out of new and bizarre rap something like this totally blindsides me and knocks me on my ass. I found this over on the always-great BlvdSt.com, posted by Air Max. Ethereal is an Atlanta based rapper/producer on his own planet. His style is aesthetically similar to that Flying Lotus/Gonjasufi/Brainfeeder/Shabazz Palaces electronic-rap shit, but imbued with an authentically Southern influence and lacking any of the self-conscious pretentiousness of those other guys. His tracks are a liberal mixture of late 90s underground rap, Southern rap trunk rattlers, drum and bass, heavy bass/dubstep, and a whole lot of weed. There’s no way this should work, and yet dude pulls off the style with major success. This is cloud rap on steroids. I’ve been checking out his Soundcloud all afternoon, and he’s got a ton of shit on there, from digital thrash/slowed down remixes of Yelawolf and “BMF” (and “Ride and Swerve”, posted above), to electronic minimixes like the amazing “Attack from the Sky” to samples from his upcoming Real. Good. EP. I recommend starting with the 42 Degrees mixtape. I’ve been bumping this shit all afternoon. Definitely a dude to look out for; we will be paying attention to him from now on for sure. He’s deserving of the rarely used but always interesting “rap weirdos” tag.
