p4k Selector with DJ Quik

Not sure when this went up, and even though the ‘freestyle’ he spits is actually a couple of verses from (my favorite The Book Of David track) “Killer Dope”, the interview portion (here) where Quik breaks down how he approaches tracks and gives some feedback on the selector beats is incredible.

But the main reason I’m posting this is because he spits the “I ain’t no house n***a, like __________ / if this is UAC music then what makes it so awful?” line, which is edited on the commerical release, but not here, and it turns out he was taking a shot at Troy Marshall, VP of Urban Promotions at Interscope.

The internet doesn’t offer a whole lot in terms of explanation as to Quik’s issue(s) with Marshall, but I’ll hazard a guess that it has something to do with Interscope’s handling of Quik and AMG’s group, The Fixxers, who signed to the major after their single, “Can U Werk Wit Dat” emerged as an unexpected hit in 2006. Their debut album was subsequently shelved, and then sold (surreptitiously) through the MySpace Page of Secret Music Group

Regardless, the man born David Blake is a living legend, and this trip inside the mind of a musical genius is well worth taking.
